Photography begins with the process of moving from inattention to attention. Stephen Shore expressed this very well when he said that a camera is “the technical means in photography of communicating what the world looks like in a state of heightened awareness. And it’s that awareness of really looking at the everyday world with clear and focused attention that I’m interested in.”
Once I see something that is appealing (and/or interesting), something I would like to catch, hold onto, and show others, I use technology and technique to produce an image that represents a fair “capture” of the scene. Sometimes the best result, in my own mind, ends up looking just like what I originally saw (or what I think I saw!); other times, the ultimate image that I produce is somewhat different. “Creative realism” is probably a good label for my own style.
